Do consumers have a preference of human-looking or robotic-looking robots? New research provides some answers and, interestingly, it is based upon personality types. A team led by Professor Kerstin Dautenhahn at the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Computer Science concludes that people with more extrovert personalities tend to choose more human-looking and human-sounding, humanoid robots, while more introverted people tend to prefer mechanical-looking robots which by, the way, very well could have a head, but a metal head.

Yesterday we published the article, The Robot Form Factor Debate, which brought up the question of the robot form factor: humanoid or robotic, what do people want? I posted the question on the Yahoo iRobot stock message board and poster thatsmyredbag in the following post reminded me of a company named MyRoomBud, that makes costumes for your irobot Rommba and Scooba; while not exactly making your robot vacuum more more human-like, it’s definitely more “cuddly.” I suspect thatsmyredbag must be an extrovert (read our previous article).
Two New iRobot Verro Pool Cleaning Robots
People tend to think of iRobot primarily as the maker of the Roomba robot vacuum. But you may not know that they also make a line of pool cleaning robots called the Verro. Today, they have announced an expansion of the Verro Pool Cleaning Product line, just in time for the 2008 pool season, with the addition of two new models, the Verro 100 and the Verro 500. The Verro 100 is designed specifically for above ground pools, while the Verro 500 is designed to clean in-ground pools. The Verro 100 is priced at $299 US and the Verro 500 is $999 US.
